What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an acronym for the 'European Travel Information and Authorisation System'. The important thing to keep in mind is that ETIAS is NOT a visa, it is a visa waiver, similar to how the ESTA works to allow certain travellers to enter the USA.

Starting in the first half of 2025, travellers from current visa-exempt countries will be required to have this travel authorization to enter these 30 countries within the Schengen Area in Europe:

• AUSTRIA • BELGIUM • BULGARIA • CROATIA • CYPRUS • CZECH REPUBLIC • DENMARK • ESTONIA • FINLAND • FRANCE • GERMANY • GREECE • HUNGARY • ICELAND • ITALY • LATVIA • LIECHTENSTEIN • LITHUANIA • LUXEMBOURG • MALTA • NETHERLANDS • NORWAY • POLAND • PORTUGAL • ROMANIA • SLOVAKIA • SLOVENIA • SPAIN • SWEDEN • SWITZERLAND

With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation travellers can enter these countries as often as they need to for short-term stays, which is normally classed as up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Application and Validity Information

The ETIAS will cost €7, will need to be applied for online in advance of travel, and will be valid for three years or until the end of validity of the linked passport (whichever comes first). The traveler's passport should not expire in less than three months and it should not be older than 10 years. Applicants under 18 or above 70 years of age will be exempt from needing to pay.
