Why Choose a Certified Property?

Booking a hotel with an official certification offers peace of mind and tangible benefits for both the traveler and the environment:

  • Verified Impact: Certifications aren’t just "greenwashing." They require rigorous third-party audits to prove the property is actually reducing waste, saving energy, and supporting local communities.

  • Corporate Responsibility: For business travelers, staying in certified properties helps meet company-wide ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals and Carbon Reduction Targets.

  • Quality Assurance: Many sustainability standards (like ISO) also focus on management quality, often resulting in a more efficient and professional guest experience.

  • Healthier Spaces: Buildings with high eco-standards (like BREEAM) often feature better air quality and natural lighting, improving guest wellness.

How to Find Sustainable Properties

We have made it easy to identify and shortlist eco-friendly options during your search:

1. Use the Sustainability Filter

To narrow down your results quickly, use the 'Sustainability Certification' filter located in the sidebar of the search results page. Ticking this box will instantly refine your list to show only properties that hold a recognised eco-label.

2. Look for the Label

While browsing, look for the 'Sustainability certification' label under to the property name. This acts as a quick visual indicator that the hotel meets high environmental standards.

3. View the Details

To see the specific certification a hotel holds and a breakdown of their green initiatives, click through to the individual property listing.

Key Certifications to Look For

We prioritise over 50 highly respected certifications. While many are global, you will frequently see these prominent standards within the UK and international markets:

UK & Global Industry Standards

  • Green Tourism: The most prominent UK-specific certification. It’s the industry standard for British hotels and B&Bs.

  • EcoSmart by Greengage: A rapidly growing UK-based accreditation specifically designed for the corporate travel and meetings market.

  • Green Key (FEE): An international standard with a very strong presence in England, Wales, and Scotland, often used by larger hotel chains (e.g., Marriott, Hilton, IHG).

  • BREEAM: The UK’s primary method for assessing the sustainability of the building's design and construction. This is often held by newer, high-end builds.

  • ISO 14001 / ISO 9001 / ISO 50001: Standard international management certifications used by many UK corporate hotel groups to manage environmental impact and quality.

  • EarthCheck: A global benchmarking tool used by several major UK resorts and luxury properties.

Other Recognised Labels

You may also see certifications such as Travelife (popular with international operators), LEED (high-end building designs), Green Globe, or Beyond Green (boutique luxury eco-hotels).
